What’s New at Sail Caribbean
Summer 2009 is Underway!
Our early summer programs, Echo College Leadership & Sailing Expedition and Early Bravo Sailing, Scuba & Watersports, have already sailed, dived, tubed, wakeboarded, snorkeled, hiked, learned, danced and explored the Caribbean. Those students can now entertain their friends at home with tales of adventure. Check out the Photo Albums from those programs.
The rest of our teen summer adventure programs (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Foxtrot & Tango) have left the docks. Be sure to follow their travels on our Trip Updates. Congratulations to Dominique!
The winner has been chosen for The Gallery Collection's 1st Annual Write-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship Contest. New Dive Shop on Norman Island!
Sail Caribbean Divers has expanded! We are proud to announce that we now have a new full-service dive shop in the Bight on Norman Island, located on the beach next to the renowned Pirate's Bight Beach Bar & Grill, famous for its food and nightly entertainment.
The Bight on Norman Island is a famous pirate anchorage and is a must-visit stop with all boaters in the BVI - all of our summer programs in the BVI certainly stop there! Norman Island was made famous in Robert Louis Stevenson's book Treasure Island. Read more on Sail Caribbean Divers' website.
BVI is #1 Caribbean destination for Wreck Diving
It's official! Scuba Diving magazine recognizes the British Virgin Islands for its fantastic wreck diving.
"Any conversations about wreck diving in the Caribbean usually begin and end with the RMS Rhone, off Salt Island. The 310-foot ship lies broken into two pieces and boasts artifacts from 140 years ago when she sank. There’s so much to see, including a variety of resident marine life. You’ll need a two-tank trip to dive both sections. There’s also Wreck Alley, off Cooper Island, where three sunken vessels are adjacent to a wall."

Foxtrot Environment Service Yields Results!
Foxtrot Environmental Service, Sailing and Scuba students worked hard during this past Summer 2008 collecting data on sea turtles, coral reefs, water quality, and sea grass beds. The specific data collected by Sail Caribbean students is submitted to local scientists and international organizations for further research and protection of endangered species and fragile ecosystems.
This summer, the Foxtrot programs caught 5 turtles, four of which were Hawksbill Turtles and one was a Green Turtle. Two of the turtles had not been tagged previously so we measured them, recorded the information and then gave them both flipper and pitt tags. The other three turtles had been tagged before. Two of them were turtles that Sail Caribbean students had tagged in the summer of 2007. We measured the first and found that it had grown 5 cm since last year. The second had been tagged last year at Cooper Island and it had grown by 8cm! We spotted (and chased) a lot of other turtles as well during the summer, especially Green Turtles off Peter Island.
For coral reefs, water quality and sea grass monitoring, our Foxtrot Program Director, Amanda Crichton, has summarized the student data from this year to serve as a baseline of comparison for years to come. To see the results of Foxtrot 2008 students' hard work, check out these reports:
Tango Program makes headlines in Tortola
