Experiential Learning on Alpha Summer Adventures
This is Emeraude, requesting docking instructions, over!
Emeraude. You'll be stern-to starboard-to on the seaside of B-dock, over.
Copy that! Thank you. This is Emeraude standing by on 72.
You're Skipper-of-the-day heading into Sopers Hole at West End. You've just received your docking instructions and your crewmates await your command. You tell them where to place the fenders, where to put the bow, stern and spring lines. The dinghy is brought forward. You're ready! You maneuver Emeraude into position, planning for some prop walk, and shift into reverse.
The stern slides into the slip as your 50' yacht straightens out. Docklines are tossed and you're in! Emeraude is secure! High-fives all around. There's no better feeling!
No sailing experience necessary! During our 30 years through many summer adventures, we've seen all levels of skill and interest. Many of our teens have never sailed before, so we start right from the beginning with everyone. Those with previous sailing experience contribute their knowledge and skill. Our staff will provide sailing instruction every day as you sail from one anchorage to the next. You'll learn to raise and trim the sails, steer a straight course, safely tack and jibe your 50' yacht, and then secure it for a restful night's sleep. Our sailing curriculum covers all the basics as well as some advanced coastal cruising topics related to the particular conditions of the British Virgin Islands. Learn more about sailing
At Sail Caribbean, our philosophy is that experiential learning - learning by doing - is the best way to become a real sailor, maybe even a sailor for life. Each day of your summer sailing adventure, you'll take on a different responsibility onboard, rotating through Skipper-of-the-day and Navigator-of-the-day. And there's more to it than just learning to sail. You'll learn that life onboard means conservation, respect, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, and compromise you'll even learn to cook "Delly Chicken" for your crew. Our staff are trained to proactively facilitate your learning experience. They'll teach you, support you, guide you, and then step back to let you do it all yourself when the time is right. Once you've overcome the challenges of skippering a sailboat, everything else seems easy. Now you understand not only how to take command, but how to take responsibility. And after living and sailing with a diverse crew, cooperation becomes second nature. You'll realize that the skills you've learned and the knowledge you've gathered at sea will have a new meaning and use back home.
