Experiential Learning

“Let’s head up a little to steer 215 degrees. Saba looks like a mountain peak coming out of the sea.”

As Navigator-of-the-day, you study the charts, read the cruising guide, plot the course for the day, and then make sure your crewmates know where to steer. It's only your third day ever sailing and you've used the parallel rulers and a divider to work out the path of your voyage. You're confident in your calculations. Now it's time to leave Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten, and head for Ladder Bay, Saba, the "Island in the Sky."

No sailing experience necessary. Over our 30 years, we've seen all levels of skill and interest. Many of our teens have never sailed before, so we start right from the beginning with everyone. Those with previous sailing experience contribute their knowledge and skill. Our staff will provide sailing instruction every day as you sail from one anchorage to the next. teen summer adventure experiential learningYou'll learn to raise and trim the sails, steer a straight course, safely tack and jibe your 50' yacht, and then secure it for a restful night's sleep. Our sailing curriculum covers all the basics as well as some advanced "blue water" cruising topics related to the particular conditions of the Leeward and Windward Islands. Learn more about Sailing

On Sail Caribbean's teen summer adventure camps, our philosophy is that experiential learning – learning by doing – is the best way to become a real sailor, maybe even a sailor for life. Each day, you'll take on a different responsibility onboard, rotating through Skipper-of-the-day and Navigator-of-the-day. And there's more to it than just learning to sail. You'll learn that life onboard means conservation, respect, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, and compromise… you'll even learn to cook "Delly Chicken" for your crew. Our staff are trained to proactively facilitate your learning experience. They'll teach you, support you, guide you, and then step back to let you do it all yourself when the time is right.

Once you've overcome the challenges of skippering a sailboat, everything else seems easy. Now you understand not only how to take command, but how to take responsibility. And after living and sailing with a diverse crew, cooperation becomes second nature. You'll realize that the skills you've learned and the knowledge you've gathered at sea will have a new meaning and use back home. Learn more about Experiential Learning

Giving back to the islands that teach us so much, all students participate in some community service activities (10-15 hours) during the Delta programs. We'll work with local youth organizations in the areas of team sports, swimming, snorkeling and reading. For those who want to give a little more of their time to these initiatives, we'll maintain that extra mile of trail on Saba and restore that pristine beach to its natural state for 5 more hours of service credit.  Learn more about Community Service...
