We started out as 4 girls, 5 boys, a mate from Maine and a Captain from South Africa and now on day 6, we are so much moreā€¦. We have dealt with homesickness, seasickness, anti-washing-dishes-sickness, lack-of-water-sickness and seemed to have turned all of these around with some loud country music, lots of laughter, many debriefs and a large sprinkle of Adobo seasoning spice.

Each person joined this boat as an individual and it’s amazing to see how each individual has grown into themselves. We have some who have earned their Open Water diving certifications and are overjoyed to have seen a spiny lobster, a school of tarpon and some barracuda. On day 1, we handed over the helm to a returning student who successfully navigated us out of a marina and into the Caribbean Sea, we have a brand new student who has successfully picked up a mooring ball and is half way to achieving his crew certification. Today on the helm, we had a student who docked the boat in very windy, trying conditions but he did so slowly and with confidence. We have students who have never sailed before and in a short time, they have learned the maneuvers and the terminology.

Each and every day, we learn something new about the boat, about how to sail and get to our next destination, something new about our crew mates and most importantly, ourselves.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
