Alpha 1 Day 13 – Day 14: Memories Made

When we woke up, we found ourselves in a different place than where we had settled in for the night. The staff woke up early to move the boats while the students slept, so that we could wake up and begin our adventures right off the bat. If you’ve ever seen a postcard of the BVI or looked it up online, you have probably seen a picture of this iconic place. Pools of shallow light blue water resting in between the igneous boulders of the Baths which have been shaped and rounded by years of the ocean’s weathering.  We swam to shore from our boats and hiked through the gaps in the boulders, popping out on a small beach on the other side of the boulder clumps.

From here, we snorkeled back to where we started and spent 20 minutes jumping off of Jump Rock that Sail Caribbean staff set up while we were away. After having a chance to move our bodies and get oxygen flowing through, each crew member took the crew test, a multiple choice exam testing the sailing knowledge that we have learned and practiced over the program.

When we arrived back at Hodges Creek Marina later in the afternoon, where we originally started our adventure, it was an evening of celebration! We had our final skits, an ending Appreciation Circle, and finally, the announcement of awards and winners of events such as Olympics and Chili Cook Off!  The results were as follows…

  • Winners of the Olympic Games – Venture!
  • Chili Cook Off Taste Test:  * vegetarian chili winners – Galilee! * meat chili winners- Venture!
  • Presentation: Galilee!
  • Theme: Venture!

Then it was time to have our final boat meeting, pack our bags and rest our tired eyes, heavy from the adventures that now lie in memory behind us.

Thank you so much Alpha 1 Fleet! We thank you for being a part of this wonderful adventure in the islands with us, for learning, for making us laugh, and for making our jobs the best ever!  It’s safe to say, we miss you already!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
