Alpha 1 & Tango 1: Day 2 – First Sail to Little Harbour!

By wpdev June 29, 2021

Day 2

Boats were up at 8 am and eager to get on with their adventure. The breakfast teams on each boat prepared the first meal for their new friends and got ready for the prior to first briefing, an in-depth orientation of the boat and life onboard. Throughout the morning each boat had a visit from the Alpha and Tango Program Director, Andrew Arter, to go through some rules to make for a fun and safe program.

The first lesson of the program was de-docking. The four boats in the fleet made their way off the docks and headed to Peter Island. On the journey over students learned how to raise/lower the mainsail and furl/unfurl the jib.

After a three-hour sail and quesadillas for lunch, students completed a med anchoring in Little Harbor. Med anchoring is a hybrid of anchoring, rafting and docking used in regions where there is little room and tidal range. The boats (Stella, The Great Catsby, Kajsa and Moet) all successfully anchored and enjoyed an afternoon of snorkeling, jumping off the bow and setting up hammocks for the sunset.

The day concluded with students sitting down for a family-style meal of stuffed peppers followed by their first boat meeting to debrief on how the day went. After making sure the boat was cleaned and ready for another day of sailing, students found their own cozy spot around the boat (either inside or out) to enjoy a well-deserved night’s sleep.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
