Alpha 2 Day 11: Little Harbor to Sandy Cay to Cane Garden Bay!

There is a special coziness in life – the type that you find from the blurry edges of sleep, wrapped up in your sheet, letting the steady rhythm of rainfall sing you in and out of consciousness. This morning, our boats gently rocked us awake and asleep again and awake and asleep again to that lullaby pitter-pattering on the deck above. It was the type of squall that comes in quickly and in heavy sheets. It leaves the water in a harbor silky smooth, an unmoving puddle of gray poole into the curve of an island.

You could see the clouds rolling through and the spots of sunshine traveling on the water beneath them. When we had finally woken enough to have breakfast and begin the day, we followed the spots of traveling sunshine.  We followed them until they rested upon a tiny island made primarily of sand and palm trees. We found ourselves ashore on the white sands of Sandy Cay, surrounded by unworldly shades of blue.

It was here on this spot of sand that we embraced the tradition of healthy competition and hosted our Alpha Olympics! Venture, Galilee, and I Am Free all competing for the win in 4 separate events – fender relay – an event that requires speed and endurance while burdened by fins, mask and snorkel… on land; bury-your-mate sand art – where students’ creative abilities are shared and critiqued; synchronized swimming – where the creativity is again called to the challenge, but increased in difficulty by requiring the utmost teamwork and communication; and tug-of-war – the final show of strength by each boat! The morning was spent in enthusiastic battle, war cries from all sides sounded all over the crowded beach.  The winners of each event will be announced on the final night of the program!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
