Alpha 2 2015 – Day 4

The day began with Joseph and Alex making us a buffet for breakfast. During our hearty breakfast, the other Alpha boat, Xeres, radioed over to us on Venture, proceeding to sing Happy Birthday to our birthday girl, Carla. She was overjoyed and thankful.  As we cleaned up our breakfast buffet, Bridget, our captain today, and Garrett, her navigator, started preparing for the day’s sail. We sailed from Monkey Point on Guana Island to Sandy Point to explore the island. During the sail, we covered a lesson on downwind sailing. Matt was a major help in assisting raising the main sail. During the sail, Casey demonstrated his awesome free diving skills while saving our boat bucket that had fallen off the boat.

Once we got there, Alex, Garrett, Carla and Bridget jumped in to the beautiful blue water and to their excitement, saw two sting rays while swimming! To get to the island from the boat, John, David and Will decided to swim. We then played touch football (the American style) against the staff along with Xeres, which we of course dominated. We all got to hang out and get to know the whole program a little bit better.

After our time on the island, we motored to Cane Garden Bay. After a little time spent cleaning, completed right on time, we got to go to shore for a couple of hours of island fun and even some relaxation.

We ended the day with the celebration of Carla’s birthday! Olivia and Alex made Carla a scrumptious Funfetti cake with chocolate frosting, not gobbled up a second before a loud, rambunctious recital of Happy Birthday!

Today our crew did a great job of beating the staff at football, but we need to improve on our time keeping. Our miracle moment was being able to go to shore, and getting cake for Carla’s birthday.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
