Alpha 2 2015 – Day 5

written by mate, Alex Armson, brought to you by the crew of Xeres

Today, Marret was our captain, Miles was our navigator and Sophie was our mate. We sailed from Sandy Cay to Pirates Bight on Norman Island. It was challenge day, so we sailed the boat completely without help from the staff for the first time! We worked really well together as a team and made it safely to Pirates Bight. Sophie and Merritt worked really hard at the helm which contributed to our success, as well as Miles’ talents as a navigator. Under the the direction of the three head haunchos, Lilly, Abby, Paige, Eli, Ale, Michael, Mack, Logan, and Luke worked collectively to perform all the day’s task with stellar aptitude and ease making it one of the best challenge days Kevin, Xeres‘ captains, has ever seen.

After arriving to the Bight, we went ashore and hiked to the top of Norman Island. At the climax of the hike, there is a helipad that we played games like “ninja”, which involves tactfully “attacking” ones opponents until you’re the last person standing. We then played loads of football and volleyball on the beach and ate at the restaurant which looks out to the beautiful blue water.

It was a great day and we have proven that we can handle the boat ourselves, which is a great achievement considering that we are only five days into the program.  Our crew did a great job of working together without staff but we need to work on our group focusing more.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
