Alpha 3 & Tango 3: Day 4 – Lee Bay

Day 4

The morning was filled with anticipation and excitement for the Electric Caribbean Challenge. Many students have been seeing the silly photos on social media and have been asking what they are all about. This was the morning they had the honor of finding out for themselves! Each boat was given a series of challenges that required them to dingy back and forth from the staff boat to be judged. Challenges included creating a boat song/rap, dressing up their captain and mates, decorating their dinghy, whipping up a delicious snack for the hungry staff boat and coordinating a jump off the bow of their boat. It should also be noted that Great Catsby woke up to find a squid on their boat in the morning. It was the talk of the fleet.

Once the games concluded and lunch was over, the fleet put up their sails and went to Lee Bay. The lesson of the day was learning how to heave to. The boats sailed a long starboard tack out to the layline, then tacked in and sailed into Lee Bay while the sun was setting.

Layline: an imaginary line extending from the objective (typically a racing mark) to indicate the point at which a boat should tack or gybe in order to just clear the mark on the correct side.

After anchoring at Lee Bay the students had some time to relax before dinner, showers and boat meetings. Since the students have been together for a few days, the boat meetings consisted of deeper conversations, facilitated by counselors. These conversations allowed everyone to open up and learn more about their fellow crew members.
