Alpha and Tango: Days 11 & 12 – Little Harbor and The Baths

By wpdev August 7, 2022

Day 11:

Waking up bright and early at Great Harbor we ate our breakfast excited for the day ahead of us. Dropping the mooring ball after some morning water sports, we sailed out into the channel to practice some man overboard drills under sail. Next, we learned how to do a Mediterranean anchoring in Little Harbor and commenced our watersports, small boat sailing, and snorkeling fun! After a marine biology lesson on turtles, we jumped in the water and a saw turtles and eagle rays! Watching the beautiful sunset over Tortola, we turned up the music for boat socials. Looking up at the stars, we reminisced on the day behind us and the frontiers of tomorrow.

Day 12:

Written by Abby Scott, Mate

The day started at Little Harbour at 7am, waking up to beautiful views, where students got breakfast started. Some boats prepped the classic Breakfast Buffet, others cooked eggs and toast. After cleaning up, we got ready to untie our stern lines and pick up the anchor to head out to The Baths (Virgin Gorda).

Getting to The Baths is always a bit of a race, as its popularity makes mooring balls scarce at times. We motored upwind to make it there on time, and once the park was spotted, we braved the ocean spray to ready lines and picked up a ball close to shore.

Once everyone had their snorkel stuff on deck, staff began ferrying students to the swim area where we all swam into the park for our geology lesson and “hikle” (hike and snorkel). An hour and a half was spent exploring the park, playing in Devil’s Bay, and enjoying a snorkel back to the swim area.

Lunch of sandwiches and leftovers was prepped before dropping the ball and heading back towards Tortola. Some boats got more docking practice to fuel up at Trellis, while others made their way to Marina Cay to pick up a ball for the night.

Last ocean showers were enjoyed with a dance party and the afternoon ended with dinner prep. Since this is one of the last meals aboard, students are getting creative with the last of provisioning.

We are excited for Long Bay/Olympics and the BBQ tomorrow before getting ready to leave tomorrow.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
