Alpha 1 Day 3: Snorkel Sightings

Today was another exciting day of Alpha adventures. Waking up at Cooper Island, Sarah and Jenna cooked the crew a delicious breakfast of bacon and eggs before we started getting ready for the day. Daniel, Sean, Mike and Ellie learned more about diving and even saw a sting ray. Sean and Ellie had fun playing paddy cake underwater like mer-children. Jack, Julian, Sara and Jenna went snorkeling and saw some incredible fish, including a barracuda. Alex saw a lion fish. Julian and Jenna went on Opal Bella again and focused on learning how and when to trim the sail.

We left Cooper Island around 2p.m. for the day’s destination, The Bight on Norman Island. Our captain of the day was Jack, with help navigating from his mate, Ellie. We all sailed aboard Venture, on the way learning points of sail, parts of the sail and unfurling the jib. We improved on picking up a mooring ball (on the first try!). We all showered and Jack & Ellie made a delicious stir fry dinner.

After dinner and clean up, we all went to shore and got smoothies, played volleyball and did the helium block challenge, a team building activity that focuses on plenty of communication. Arriving back at the boats, everyone settled into their bunks for a good night’s rest in preparation for what tomorrow brings.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
