Alpha 1 2015 – Day 6

written by mate, Alex Armson, Brought to you by the crew of Venture

Today, Jenna was our captain of the day and had Mike as her navigator and mate. We were sailing from Cooper Island to Salt Island, which was a pretty short sail. After eating a delicious breakfast of pancakes made by Daniel and Sean, the divers Ellie, Mike, Sean and Daniel finally finished their last day of dive skills. In the meantime, Sara and Jack had a lot of fun tubing. Jenna and Julian also went on Opal Bella for a second time to help complete their certifications. We all reconvened on the beach where Ellie, Alex, Sean and Mike went paddle boarding and faced many challenges of mini “tsunamis” and games of king of the paddle board. We all had time to socialize with people from other boats and get to know some unfamiliar faces.

We went to Salt Island where after a few attempts, we successfully anchored.  We then all went to land where we had a short lesson about the history of the once very important place. We took part in community service by picking up washed up trash and had a friendly competition with the other Alpha boat to see who could pick up the most. Unfortunately, we lost. Daniel then accidentally fell into the mud when we started to explore the island, which our Water Sports Intern, Grom, didn’t initially realize and fell into as well when she tried to jump across the same river.

We ended the eventful day with delicious quesadillas and brownies. Today our crew did a great job of having A LOT of fun. However, we need to work on cohesiveness when completing tasks. Our curriculum today included anchoring and what to do when it doesn’t work the first time round. Our miracle moment was when we had yummy brownies.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
