Alpha 1 & Tango 1: Day 12 – Long Bay BBQ and Olympics

By wpdev July 10, 2021

Day 12

The students had a slower morning since the next couple of days would be early wake-ups. The boats headed to Long Bay for SC Olympics and a BBQ on the beach.

Each boat had to create a team flag and some even painted their faces for extra team spirit. Once ashore, the boats had to compete in a series of events. First up was the relay race. Each student had to run across the beach, spin around a fender and run back, all while wearing a snorkel mask and flippers. Next, they had to create a synchronized swim in only 10 minutes. Finally, they had to chase down one of their counselors, bury them in the sand and create a beautiful sandcastle on top using trash collected on the beach. This event was a great way to be silly AND help the environment!

The rest of the afternoon was spent tubing, kayaking, sailing and playing on the beach. Students were able to go out on our Colgates and Hobie Cats, which are both smaller sailboats. Around 6 pm the food was ready and students enjoyed dinner while watching the sunset.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
