Early Alpha 2015 – Day 11

written by Program Director, Phil Yudin

Today was another super special day…. RACE DAY! We woke up nice and early to craft a breakfast of French Toast before heading ashore again at the Bitter End, but this time it was to hike to the top of “Guy’s Trail”, which provides a beautiful vantage point above the north sound and overlooking Prickly Pear Island. Mark, Daisy, Lizzie, Sebastian, and Lorenzo were at the front of the pack, taking the trail at breakneck speed!

After the hike, we headed back to our boats for lunch and to get prepped for departure. We were allowed to drop the ball at 2 o’clock sharp, and then it was a race to see who could sail to Monkey Point on Guana Island fastest, and properly anchor! We learned the procedure for anchoring while underway, and then perfectly executed our new knowledge when we arrived. Congratulations to Galilee for being the first boat to be on anchor with a proper snub line tied!

After we all were on anchor, it was time to prepare our chili for the Chili Cookoff! We were judged based on best presentation, taste, and theme. Each boat chose a stellar theme, including Titanic, Wizard of Oz, and Safari, and the chili was delicious! Caroline made a wonderful Dorothy with Moss and Garrett as tin man and the scarecrow. Olivia, Grayson, Missy, and Ashley were our guides through the safari, and Harry was magically transformed into a rhinoceros while Max became a dangling chimpanzee. Kyle and Daisy were the captains of the Titanic, rescuing the chili from the iceberg. After dinner, it was just time to clean, meet as a boat, and get some sleep for the long day ahead of us tomorrow.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
