Follow Our Journey! Alpha 4, Charlie, Foxtrot, Sierra 3 – Day 10

With the sun rising over the Scrub Island docks, the campers made ready to de dock after a quick morning breakfast of bagels and eggs. As it was Challenge Day, the skipper of the day, navigator, and mate met with Max (fleet captain) at the cafe to get a briefing of the navigation. Challenge day is the day where the campers take over the boat for the whole day. They only get three questions to ask the staff all day meaning they have to sail the boat, pick up the mooring ball, and make lunch all on their own. The end destination was Anegada: a little island about a 4 hour sail from Tortola that is very flat but has so many cool animals and attractions on it.

The whole fleet did such a great job on their sails and got to Anegada in no time! Once there, they made a quick lunch and got ready to head to shore for a long afternoon touring around the island. Our first stop was to a beach. Janaye, Ebba, Bella, and Lilly gave a quick lesson on beach cleanups and why trash on the beach is not good. The campers had a competition between boats on who could collect the most trash and Samoa ended up winning!

Then, we headed over to Big Bamboo where the campers could order food, ice cream, and buy some cool merchandise at the gift shop. Afterwards, on our last stop, we went to the shark pool! It is a very shallow part of the water where baby sharks like to hang out and even sometimes flamingos. Some campers saw three baby lemon sharks!

With a long day of sailing and exploring, the campers were excited to have a quiet night on board and head to bed.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
