Departing the spectacular excess of Saint Barth’s, the Caribbean stomping grounds of the rich and famous, we set our sights on the majestic island of Saba, a towering fortress of a mountain with sheer cliffs on all sides. A few spectacular hours of sailing, which brought us past droves of flying fish and even a whale later, we completed our partial circumnavigation of cloud-crowned Saba to pick up a mooring ball in Ladder Bay, named for the staircase (ladder) up a nearly vertical cliff topped with a customs house that was used as the only entry point to the island until the mid-twentieth century.

After a refreshing meal on board, we enjoyed a spectacular snorkel, seeing sharks, turtles, and tons of colorful reef fish. Waking up early the next morning, we moved our boat to Fort Bay and made landfall! After a taxi ride up an impossibly steep road, we visited Jobean, a Saba resident and glass artist who showed us how to make our own glass beads.

To end our amazing experience on Saba, we made the nearly vertical climb up Mount Scenery, the tallest peak in the Netherlands to visit the Cloud Forest. A short time later, we left the clouds to prepare for our night sail back to the BVI. With the wind behind us and clear skies above, we enjoyed a calm night of stargazing, good company, and adventure!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
