Dead Man’s to Long Bay

This morning, we woke up at the reasonable time of 8a.m., and had toasted bagels and eggs for breakfast. At 9a.m., we up-anchored and departed Dead Man’s saying goodbye to all our tagged turtles and heading to Long Bay back on Tortola.

Both fleets were super fast at putting up both the main and jib sails after 18 days of practice, and decided to race to Long Bay. At Long Bay, we anchored and deep-cleaned the boats. After a lunch of baked ziti, we did some watersports. Myra tried out the wake-skate for the first time and did awesome. She nearly got up which was so impressive for a first timer! Alejandro gave her a lot of tips, along with Matt. who are pros at this stage. David got up on the wake-skate as well and showed off this newly found skills.

At 3p.m., everyone headed to the beach for Olympics! The games were led by Program Directer Oliver, a.k.a. Greek God Odeus. He dressed in a Greek style toga, made a trident from a boat hook and had an impressive crown from aluminum foil.

The games began with tug-a-war. Sierra and Foxtrot grabbed the line from opposite ends and the tugging began. It was a tough fight, but Sierra took the win! Sierra then played against the big bad staff. It was a short game as the staff dropped the line and all of Sierra fell back into the water. The staff found it hilarious!

The next game was dizzy fenders. This was a relay race, a quick run followed by ten spins with the students heads against the fender. Everyone got extremely dizzy. Reese, Dylan, Paul and Matt all fell into the water because they were so disorientated. Vin fell face first into the sand! Sierra won this game, with Foxtrot just seconds behind them.

Next up was sand art. The students chased down two staff members, tackled them to the sand and made them into beautiful sand art. Eliot was made into a sand princess. Liz was made into a mer-lobster, which was Kayla’s idea! Both teams were very creative but Foxtrot came out on top for this one.

The final round was synchronized swimming. Both teams worked together and preformed a great show for the staff.

After all the games, everyone was starving and the BBQ was ready. The students raced for the food and ate burgers, hot dogs, salad, chips, and biscuits until they were stuffed. All students were in great form after a wonderful day of activates and headed back to the boats to relax a little. Emily swam back to Spyglass trying to beat the dingy carrying the rest of the crew. She beat us by seconds, but let it be known, we gave her a decent head start.

It was time for final boat showers. On Miss You, Eric, Marley , Julie and Paige all jumped into the water trying to make the biggest splash during their last showers. On Spyglass, Aidan, Liam, and Nico had a diving competition, with some impressive jumps coming from all. The sun began to set on a fun-filled day and both boats relaxed for their second to last evening on their boats and slowly fell asleep.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
