Today was tasked to the students as Challenge Sail that started with an interesting wake up. Students were told they had to wake themselves up and then wake the staff up at 7:30 a.m. They used pots and pans and giddily woke them up at 7:00 a.m. Everyone enjoyed breakfast and the students did an impressive job of prepping the boat for the day’s sail.

It was a windy day and slightly overcast. After a long chat amongst crew, boats proceeded to drop the mooring ball and set sail towards Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor. It took time to raise the sails as there was not help from staff, but plenty of hard work and coordination between our empowered students. Once sails were up, we shot across the channel with ease and pride. Upon arrival at VGYH, we got our docking instructions and headed into the marina.

Docking was of course tricky with the windy conditions, but our crews exceeded expectations when they conquered the task! After, the boats were cleaned and a delicious pizza bagel lunch was prepared. Then, the divers went out diving for the afternoon and the boats had cleaning inspections which were passed without a hitch. After, the students had some shop time and and a chance to call home which they were overjoyed to make the most of. As the divers came back, dinner started cooking, it was a lovely homemade chicken curry. It was an evening of a lot of jokes and laughter, everyone hanging out and bonding over chatter.

Shortly after, everyone powered down after what was an amazing challenge sail day! Staff captains and mates all around were so very pleased and proud of their students and looking forward to the full challenge day! But definitely minus the pots and pans wake up!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
