Day 11:

Written by Melissa Ferreira, Mate & Dive Instructor (Boat: Electre)

Day 11 of camp on Electre started with bacon and eggs for breakfast moored at Saba Rock. The campers were excited to get up and going on our longest sail of the trip to Anegada. Before getting underway, we had to dock to get watered up. Our skipper of the day was Luke Simon who was assisted by mate Michael Cooke and navigator Mia Titus in planning the route to Anegada. Sailing closer to the island, we could see beautiful turquoise waters and a long narrow island. We had sandwiches for lunch on the ball and then dinghied over to the island, our dinghy chord snapped unfortunately and so we had to get a lift with program director Arter and provisions manager Lilly in their black Lamborghini rib which was fun. All the campers were shuttled to the big bamboo restaurant in trucks and had the opportunity to see the island in a unique way. At the Big Bamboo, campers had the opportunity to visit the gift shop, get ice cream, eat a delicious dinner, snorkel and hang out together as a fleet on the beach. The day ended with a beautiful sunset. Once back on Electre, we had our night time tea and hot chocolate ritual this time with a baked banana bread treat before bed. Just before power down, a huge thunderstorm passed with some heavy rains to lull us to sleep.

Day 12:

Written by Alli Fransblow, Student

We started off our day around 8:15 and had a great meal of cereal and bagels for breakfast! Today was our challenge day, so that means we got 3 questions to ask our mates and captain and we had to get from Anegada to Scrub all alone. After that we did our morning boat clean followed by our pre-departure checks. We had a pretty smooth sail to Scrub and learned a lot about our capabilities and teamwork. We had an extremely well done docking in Scrub Island followed by a 26 minute clean (record time)! After we got our inspection passed by Arter we got to go to shore and enjoy walking around and learning about Scrub. We went to a dive shop, a boutique, a grocery store, and a pool! At 4:30 we got our phones for 30 minutes to call home to our loved ones! We then got to take our first land showers. Following that we had a delicious dinner of pasta bolognese. Next our Soxtrot students and anyone else who wanted went to a mbio lesson about sharks! We saw 3 nurse sharks, tarpons, moon jellyfish, and three rays. After we had a great boat meeting to wrap up what we did well and have to improve on following our challenge day. Then we hung out for the rest of the night until bed in the helm and the bow. Overall we had an amazing day of learning and bonding!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
