Mary was our skipper for the day, Parker was her navigator and Anna was the mate. We woke up at Hodges Creek Marina and had breakfast which was prepared by Marc and Jenna. Then, we had our prior to first lesson, where we learned all about the different parts of the boat and the safety aspects that we need to pay attention to. Clodagh, Venture‘s captain, then gave us a de-docking lesson, and we came up with a plan on how to set sail from Hodges to Cooper Island, our first destination. Mary did an excellent job at controlling the boat out of the marina and into the channel for our first day on the water!

The weather was sunny with around 15 knots of wind, which was perfect. We had a lesson in raising the mainsail so that we could start some real sailing! Marc and Greg did a great job at working together and working efficiently raising the sail. We also learned how to unfurl the jib and how to tack.

Once we arrived at Cooper Island, we all did a swim test and had a scrumptious lunch. Afterwards, we all went to shore to start preparing to dive. Daniella and Jenna began their confined water sessions for their Open Water certifications. Meanwhile, Anna , Matt, Greg, Lindsay, Nes, Mark, Greg, Parker, and Mary went on a fun dive at the Ginger Steps, where they saw a lot of black tipped reef sharks and an eagle ray!

It was a great first day and our crew did a great job, but we need to work on efficient communication while picking up a mooring ball. Our miracle moment was when we all saw the sharks while diving!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
