This morning, the Delta crew awoke once more at the docks in Basseterre, St. Kitts. While some students got started making a pancake feast for breakfast, the rest began preparations for the big day ahead. Once all armed with packed lunches, water, rain jackets and hiking shoes, we were ready for our taxi tour of St. Kitts, complete with multiple awesome stops. Breakfast complete, we gathered our things and hopped into a couple of taxi vans.

The first leg of our tour took us through Basseterre, St. Kitts’ main town, and around some of the island’s historical sites including bloody river and fertility rock. We then made our first stop, where we were able to do a hike through the rainforest, all the while being showered on by the clouds above. Each of us even had the chance to swing from a jungle vine, the cherry on top of our rain forest expedition!

We then trekked up the road a bit to a local botanical garden and batik factory. Though the factory was closed for the day, we still had a wonderful time hanging out in the gorgeous grounds. On to the next leg of our tour, we met back up with our taxi drivers and made our way to St. Kitts’ most famous attraction: the fascinating Fort George.

Once up the steep road and at the base of the fort, we all ate lunch and enjoyed the stunning panoramic views of the ocean and lush volcanic hills of St. Kitts. Our group then had some free time to explore the fort and learn about its history, after which we hopped back in the taxis for the next branch of our adventure.

We drove then to Shipwreck Beach where the crew took time to swim, relax on the sand and grab snacks from the restaurant. Totally exhausted, we began the drive back to docks as late afternoon rolled around, bidding farewell to our lovely tour guides and getting started on dinner prep and showers. Full of barbecue chicken and potatoes, the whole crew fell asleep right as dinner clean was complete, eager to reflect on the day and rest up for tomorrow.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
