Good morning Sail Caribbean! August 1st was Challenge Day, which means the campers fully take over the boat, sailing, and staying on schedule. For breakfast, some had cereals and toast on the boat, while others ventured to the Scrub Deli for a breakfast sandwich. At 9 am, we all met ashore for a hike up behind the resort to a helipad landing that overlooks the Scrub Island’s north shore. While the sun was beating down on us, the uphill journey was worth the stunning views of the turquoise water and gorgeous beach. We played a couple of true course games here, such as the Human Knot.
We then headed down the hill, and the skipper, navigation, and mate from each boat went to the staff boat for a navigation briefing, discussing things to look out for on our way to Josh Van Dyke. Challenge Day was then in full swing, with campers carrying out pre-departure checks, raising their dingies, and de-docking. After clearing the coast, the real challenge began. Campers orchestrated raising their sails, deciding who would be in what position and which direction the boat should be angled. Students did a great job of listening to each other and troubleshooting! Students made sandwiches while underway before picking up a mooring ball at Sandy Cay around 3 pm. We then headed to Sandy Cay’s pristine white beach and went on a treasure hunt that the staff had coordinated. We had time to hang out and swim in the incredibly blue water before dropping the ball and motoring to Little Harbor on Josh Van Dyke.
We picked up a mooring ball at Josh Van Dyke and had boat showers before all boats headed to shore for dinner. We enjoyed a classic Caribbean buffet of chicken wings, coleslaw, rice and beans, and pasta salad, along with soda and fresh-cut fruit. It was fun to share a meal together as one big group and shop around at the little t-shirt shops that bordered the restaurant. After digesting, we headed to the dance floor, where Naya and Kareem got the dance circle started. We had a blast jumping around and dancing with our friends! Some of us took a plunge into the water to cool down after sweating so much! We then headed back to our boats to rinse off and have boat meetings before powering down for the night.
As the end of the program slowly approaches, we continue to savor every moment with our new friends in this special place :)!
