Foxtrot 3 & Sierra 3 Day 9: Night Adaptations & Bioluminescence

This morning, the crews of Spyglass and Paso Doble came together outside of Little Harbour on Peter Island to begin Race day! Students raised sails with speed and began their quest to Mountain Point. After many hours of sailing all the way to Virgin Gorda, the crews anchored their boats with ease. While the race was very close and both crews experienced challenges and triumphs, the ultimate winner was Spyglass!

In the afternoon, all students either dove or snorkeled the Kodiak Queen, a new dive site at Mountain Point. The site is a ship that survived Pearl Harbor that was later salvaged and purposely sunk at Mountain Point with a artistically crafted kraken built to engulf it. It is quite a super cool piece of art but also an installation to help towards bettering the marine environment in our areas.

Following that, students gathered on Spyglass for a lesson on plankton that was fascinating organisms. After showers, dinner, and boat clean, students had a lesson on night adaptations and bioluminescence. We then did a snorkel of the reef at Mountain Point. We saw a turtle, squid, and a ton of tarpon, as well as witnessed incredible displays of bioluminescence. Today was another action-packed day on the Foxtrot and Sierra fleet!
