Sierra 2 & Foxtrot 2 2015 – Day 2

The day started bright and early with everyone excited to get the program started. Miss you had breakfast at 7:15am. Sydney and Danielle laid out all the breakfast materials and the students chose their own breakfast from a variety of foods, including yogurts, cereal, fruit and bagels. By 8:00a.m., breakfast was eaten and Keith and Sammy did the clean up. Before the boats could leave, everyone got fins and masks, explored the dive shop, went through boat introductions and protocols, and put on life jackets. At 11a.m., all three boats were ready and waiting to leave docks. Hill was skipper of the day on Miss you. It was his job to de-dock the boat and assign jobs to all of his crew. Sophie, Jack and John were on Bow, Spring and Stern lines while Sutton, John and Max were on fenders. One by one the catamarans de-docked and motored into the Sir Francais Drake Channel.

On board the boats, the captains and mates taught sailing lessons on raising the main and unfurling the jib. With their new knowledge, teamwork and the help from the captain and mate the boats raised their main and unfurled their jib. Miss you and the other two Catamarans, Spyglass and I Am Free headed to Cooper Island and by 12:30p.m., they were moored and ready to jump in the crystal clear water!

Lunch was prepared by the two John’s, eaten by everyone and cleaned by Sutton and Keith. With full stomachs, the Open Water divers headed to shore to start their confined water skills. The rest of the students snorkeled at Sistern rock and later relaxed on the beach and played some football on the sand.

The afternoon flew and by the time we knew it the divers were finished, everyone returned to their separate boats and had the swim test. Each student swam around the boat three times and treaded water for three minutes. As the students treaded water, the mates showed everyone how to shower boat-style and with everyone learning quickly, they lathered up with shampoo and soap and had their first shower out at sea.

With everyone having worked up an appetite, burritos were prepared and wolfed down. After dinner, they had a boat meeting on the bow. For a true course activity, the boat did three-minute interviews to get to know everyone on the boat.

After talking about the day, everyone was slowly became exhausted and started getting ready for bed.
