Soxtrot Day 12: Long Bay to Hodges

By wpdev July 3, 2014

Seven o’clock wake up comes early after a bioluminescent splash the night before.  Skipper of the day, Seth, had difficultly waking up himself as well as others.  Campers dined on what has become known as the breakfast buffet consisting of bagels, cereal, and staple Nutella.

Divers got out of Long Bay in the morning to continue their certification.  They completed two of the five advanced dives – deep and navigation.  Non-divers enjoyed a relaxing snorkel at a bay on the leeward side of Great Camino.  Ronnie from Geneve encountered a pod of about twenty squid.  Abby (Mazurka) and Daniel (Samba) saw a cluster of sea hares on algae filled rocks.  The non-divers motor sailed Mazurka to Hodges with Captain Dave and Jen to meet the divers.

We had lunch at Hodges promptly followed by a deep clean of each boat.  According to an eye witness, campers Jules and MC were literally on their hands and knees scrubbing the cockpit.

A thorough check of the cleanliness of all boats by Program Director (PD) Oliver allowed campers to use phones.  After quick calls to parents and many text messages, tweets, and status updates, campers rallied for a mangrove clean up at Hodges.

A few battle wounds were accumulated, but campers pitched in for the greater good of Tortola.  Provisioning arrived for the rest of the trip and most campers helped staff to organize food.  Sweet and sour chicken with vegetables and rice was prepared and served for dinner.  Then divers got ready for their night dive.  They came back with reports of Green Sea Turtles, moray eels, huge snappers, and lobsters.  A welcomed fresh water shower was enjoyed before lights out at 10:30pm.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
