The Lates Fleet! Day 12
Written by Maddie T., Mate on Y-Nissi
Day 12 started with a beautiful wake-up on the docks, followed by a quick sail over to the Baths National Park for a snorkel and hike. The Baths, on Virgin Gorda, gets its name because it is a cluster of Batholithic rocks that formed on the shore. It is a great place to both snorkel and hike (we call it a hikel). During the swim, we saw a barracuda, a stingray, and even three tiny squid! We explored the rocks and found the hollow ones, not to mention seeing where the Muppets movie was filmed.

After we all finished the hikel, we headed back to our boats. We raised the sails for the last time as we headed back to Scrub, with Ellie as our skipper and John as navigator, enjoying the beautiful views and gorgeous weather. The Foxtrot and Sierra students headed to Trellis Bay Market for the Mangroves kayak excursion, whilst we enjoyed shore time after a swift docking. A local naturalist named Alex takes the students through the unique ecosystem to learn about their importance to the environment and the BVI.

Pizzas by the pool and ice cream at the beach were enjoyed by many, as well as watersports in Long Bay for crazy tubing. At 5 o’clock, preparations for Chili Cook Off began. This is a Sail Caribbean tradition where each boat makes a pot of chili and comes up with an accompanying theme for the people on the staff boat to taste and judge. Everyone planned their skits and cooked the best chili they could chef up. Beauty and the Beast, counsellor impersonation, and disco were some of the best themes of the night. After eating all the chili we could manage, we settled down for the night after another great day in the Caribbean.
