Bravo 1 & Charlie 1 2015 – Day 4

written by Photography mate, Erin Wildermuth

The students are slowly but surely becoming accustomed to their early morning wake up call. We’re up at 7:00 am, making breakfast by 7:15 and beginning our day of activities at the bright hour of 8:15. Today, we traveled from Cooper Island to Salt Island, where the students hiked up a small mountain overlooking the bay and the island’s natural lake of salt preserves. After a hefty lunch we set sail to Peter Island where we moored for the evening.

On Fermi, Jackson and Frances did a great job driving the boat during the sail. They successfully orchestrated many a jib and several a tack. Reagan was also helpful during the sail, especially when he taught winch safely to the other students. There was plenty of teamwork between the students directing and the deck hands, Jackie, Murrie, Annie, both Bens!, Hayes, Chris and Ford.

Rijoja found Nic as the skipper of the day. He led his crew through jibing and downwind sailing with ease. Charlie picked up the mooring ball on the very first attempt and Isabelle supported our points of sail lesson by teaching less experienced crew about how the wind, boat, and sails all work together. Jules, Adrianna, Jade, Ethan, Adam, Parker, Avery and James learned and executed these lessons with ease.

On Galilee, Bruno acted as out skipper of the day. He did a great job dropping the ball at Cooper and raising the sails from the helm directing Drew, Sophie, Reagan, Freddy, Alec, Max, Matt and Don. Ryan is progressing nicely through the open water diver course and also caught on to navigation quickly. Gardner did an excellent job at the helm during mooring ball pickup and also made delicious quesadillas for lunch.

We arrived at Peter Island around 4:00 pm, allowing ample time for showers and dinner before falling asleep under the stars – many of our students either brought or purchased hammocks and prefer to sleep on the docks instead of in their cabins.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
