Delta 1 Day 9 – Day 10: We Made It!

We made it!!! 21 hours and 38 minutes after departure, we lowered anchor in Marigot, St Martin. It really hit home just how far we had come as we listened to the marine radio conversations – all in french! The passage was eventful with 20-25 kt winds and 8 ft seas. Even in a near 50ft boat, 8 ft seas are big. Then, you add the dark factor….  boat crews were evenly split into ‘proud pukers’ and the iron stomachs in relation to seasickness.

As we swept towards the 63rd parallel, we also celebrated Mark’s birthday at midnight! As the sun rose, we ate sugar cinnamon bagels in the cockpit and joked about the night as definitely fitting into the ‘type two fun’ category (the kind that’s a little less fun while you’re doing it, but LOTS of fun afterwards!). Finally, anchored on solid ground, we cleaned the boat and snacked before taking showers off the stern and heading ashore to celebrate.

Here, french St. Martin’s Bastille Day is approaching, so from our anchorage, we could look across at the hill top fort lit up in red, white and blue (ironically!). We finished the night off with burgers and baked potatoes,  followed by rice crispy cake to celebrate birthdays and the 4th of July!

A friendly note to our Delta adventurers’ families: We are excited to share all the details about our down islanders’ explorations. Please, keep in mind, the fleet will have intermittent ability to email daily updates, so bare with us as they are busy creating amazing memories… but look forward to hearing all about them as internet allows!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
