Day 8 Written by Ida Vilain Stube, Mate

Challenge day!!

After a night with a few heavy rain showers, we had the chance to sleep in with a wake-up at 8:00 am. We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning with crystal clear water around us. We had delicious pancakes for breakfast, and when we ran out of syrup, our skipper went for a morning swim to grab more from other boats sailing with the fleet.

Challenge day is all about our student’s taking control of their boat. They practice the skills that they’ve learned throughout the past 8 days. More interestingly, and to also add a little bit of fun, the students are only given the opportunity to ask 3 questions to their captain and counselors for advice during the sail. Everything went smoothly and soon we were cruising over the unusually calm waters to Anegada.

Once we arrived, we took a short ride to Anegada Beach Club, where student’s had the opportunity to learn about all the marine life around the island. After our visit, we went flamingo spotting and found dozens of flamingos roaming the calm lakes.

When we returned to the boat, the most beautiful sunset happened. All of us took out our cameras to photograph such a beautiful view. As the evening went on, we settled into bed and called it a day. A wonderful day to remember.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
