The ones have started, and it’s been so much fun!

Sunday, Day 1, was a whirlwind of preparations, arrivals, and excitement for the program about to begin. Staff woke up bright and early to finish preparing the boats for students. Decks were scrubbed, fridges were cleaned, and bags were moved to new boat assignments!

Another group of staff, myself included, left for the St. Thomas airport to begin picking up students. Once picked up, they were taken across the ferry and taxied to Hodges Creek Marina. At HCM they were greeted with one of my favorite Sail Caribbean traditions: a giant welcome from the staff!

Sunday evening ended with a delicious dinner of chicken, rice, vegetables, and cheesy potatoes. Students moved their things into their respective boats, meeting their soon-to-be fellow sailors along the way. Lots of chatter, games, and friendship bracelet making continued until it was time for bed.

Monday morning, students made breakfast with their boats and got their boat photos, or boatos, taken. They met Camp Director Mike Liese and got the “Mike Talk,” which outlined the rules and expectations for students at camp.

Afterwards, boats began their pre-departure checks and began sailing to Long Bay! Once there, they had their first ocean showers and dinners with their boats. I could see lots of jumping and laughter on the student boats from the staff boat!

All in all, it’s been a great start to the program!
