Our day began bright and early as the students prepared to depart from Anegada. We were greeted by pleasant weather and a gentle breeze, which made everyone excited for a day of smooth sailing. By 8:00 a.m., Nohea was underway with Mae at the helm. Betts supported as mate, and Ava offered guidance as navigator. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs prepared by William, Ware, and Colt. With increased confidence, everyone took the initiative to navigate, raise sails, and work together.

At 11:00 a.m., we anchored at The Dogs, a group of uninhabited islands that offer premier snorkeling in crystal clear water.

During the afternoon, students had the opportunity to enjoy watersports or a fun dive. Students in the Sierra and Foxtrot programs spent the day kayaking through the mangroves near Trellis Bay. As a marine biology mate, I eagerly joined the mangrove tour. We were all excited to learn about these coastal ecosystems and the importance of stewardship to protect them. We met Alex, a local guide and dedicated naturalist, who led our kayak adventure. We visited a shallow lagoon that provides a nursery habitat for juvenile lemon sharks, and we explored the winding waterways among the mangroves. Throughout the tour, Alex shared his extensive knowledge of mangroves, marine life, and the BVIs.

We reunited with our fleet at the idyllic White Bay, Guana Island. This protected bay features postcard-worthy white sand beaches and turquoise water. Students enjoyed snorkeling, free time, and preparing for a Sail Caribbean tradition: the Chili Cookoff.

Nohea is always ready for friendly competition, and we brought flavor and excitement to our spooky themed chili dinner. At 6:30 p.m., our guest judges arrived at the dinner party and were impressed with the taste and theatrics of our chili cookoff. The fun continued on Nohea with an impromptu dance party led by Asher and Grant. Finally, we all gathered together for our nightly boat meeting to reflect on the day’s adventures and prepare for tomorrow.
