Hi everyone! I’m Lindsey from Betty’s Dream, reporting on Day 13!
This morning, we woke up on a mooring ball at the Bitter End Yacht Club at the shocking hour of 8 a.m. — yep, we got to sleep in! We treated ourselves to some delicious banana pancakes made by Liza and Oscar, paired with some patriotic tunes to celebrate the 4th of July.
At 9 a.m., the Sierra students were picked up and taxied over to the Eco Park. The team there gave us an awesome tour of their system and explained the work they do. Right now, they’re studying mosquitoes to help reduce the spread of disease, and we learned that male mosquitoes don’t bite — so we even got to stick our hands in a net to test it out! We also saw their composting and trash-sorting systems and how they break down plastics. After lots of “oohs” and “ahhs,” we helped paint a new mural (super fun!) and sorted through some trash.
Meanwhile, back at the Bitter End, the other students were enjoying watersports and riding around in Hobie Cats.
By lunchtime, the Eco Park crew returned. We had some time to explore the shops, then headed back to our boats to eat lunch. After that, the entire fleet went to shore for four hours of shore time at the Bitter End!
Students hit the grocery store, grabbed sodas and mocktails, ate snacks and ice cream, swam at the beach, sailed Hobie Cats, relaxed, and chatted — overall just having an absolute blast.
Afterward, we returned to the boats for ocean showers. We wrapped up the day with a boat meeting and started winding down early — we’ve got a big sail ahead to Anegada!
