The Lates Fleet! Day 9

This morning, the fleet woke up to a calm sunrise over Trellis Bay, with boats gently rocking and breakfast smells drifting across the water. After fueling up on yogurt and fresh fruit, our divers grabbed their gear, a big dose of excitement, and were shuttled off to the dive boat for another day exploring the underwater world of the BVI.

From Open Water beginners to Advanced and Rescue divers, everyone had a chance to put their growing skills to the test. The dive sites delivered once again—crystal-clear water, corals, and curious fish everywhere!

Back on the surface, our non-divers kicked off their own adventure. Hannah and Rosie led a coral-focused Marine Biology lesson on Stella, sharing how reef ecosystems work and why they matter. There were a lot of “whoa!” moments as students got to see coral anatomy up close before heading out for a snorkel to spot the real deal in action.

Meanwhile, the Colgate crew—Chance, Peyton, Declan, Eva, and Lila—cast off with Sara for a morning of hands-on sailing practical tests. They worked hard tacking and jibing their way across the channel, and even had a chance to take the helm and put their navigation skills to the test. Definitely one of those “learning by doing” kind of days!

By late morning, everyone regrouped at Diamond Reef for a snorkel session that turned into a highlight of the day. Parrotfish, butterflyfish, and even some squids made appearances. The water was warm, the visibility was perfect, and spirits were high.

Once back on board, there was just enough time for some pre-departure checks before the boats dropped the ball and set sail for Leverick Bay on Virgin Gorda. The wind was steady, lunch was served underway, songs were sung, and others were danced to.

Foxtrot students went ashore to GreenVI, where they got a behind-the-scenes look at sustainability on the island. A unique glimpse into how the BVI blends art and environmental stewardship. Students helped prepare the community incase of incoming bad weather.

The rest of the fleet got some much-needed ocean showers (cue the chorus of “best shower ever!”), followed by a cozy dinner on board. As the sun dipped behind the hills of Virgin Gorda, boats lit up with laughter, cleaning supplies, and more singing.

After dinner, it was time for our nightly boat meeting—shoutouts were given, hot seats were shared, and a few sleepy yawns signaled it was time to power down as tomorrow is CHALLENGE DAY!!!!!!

Another day full of salt, sun, and smiles. Tomorrow, the adventure continues!
