DSCF3249Day 4 started with a breakfast buffet, prepared for us by Georgia and Ben. Everyone munched on bagels, cream cheese, yogurt, and fruit. Georgia was our skipper of the day and she lead us through a successful mooring ball drop. We cruised into the channel and raised all sails quickly. Curtis, our Captain, showed Grace how to tie a preventer, and we set our sails for a smooth broad reach. Grace, our Mate, taught a points of sail lesson, aided by our three BK students, Grant, Maddie, and Maggie. We arrived at the Bight on Norman Island and picked up a mooring ball.

DSCF3246Everyone took some time to jump into the water and cool off after our sail. We had a fish identification lesson, then Grace and Maddie prepared pizza quesadillas for lunch. After lunch, we all hung out on the bow of the boat, and Ish, our Program Director, came aboard and played his guitar while Maggie played the ukulele, and we had a stellar jam session.

Later, all our Open Water and DSD divers
DSCN0735 headed ashore. While Nathan and Ben did their confined water dives, the DSD students got to experience a scuba dive at Angelfish Reef! Georgia, Carson, Maggie, Maddie, Daniel, and Alex all spotted a green sea turtle and nurse shark! While the divers were busy, Lizzie and Grant chilled out on shore at the Bight and snorkeled the shallow reef. The two of them, as well as some staff members, closed out the afternoon with some gnarly water sports. Grant slalom skied and absolutely shredded it. Lizzie made a solid attempt at the water skis, and though she didn’t get up, she plans on giving it another try next time we water sport! The evening closed out with Maggie and Alex cooking chicken broccoli pasta for the crew for dinner. We played a quick round of highs n’ lows at boat meeting then had another evening jam session to end a really fantastic day.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
