We woke up at Nanny Cay this morning and had yogurts, cereal, and bagels for breakfast. Sierra students took some water quality samples, then everyone headed to the beach to play a volleyball game! After our volleyball game, we prepared to de-dock from Nanny and set sail for Cooper Island.

Once we arrived at Cooper, we prepped hoagies for lunch, relaxed and splashed around for a bit. Then, we had a turtle lesson aboard Moselle and learned about the turtles of the BVI and the Conservation Fisheries Department’s turtle tagging program. Everyone was super pumped after the lesson, so we hopped into the water and went turtle tagging! Within a few minutes, we caught a turtle, and brought it back to the boat. It was incredible! Students took turns taking measurements and recording data, then staff administered flipper tags and pit tags, and carefully released the turtle. It was so exciting to catch our first turtle of the season! We spotted a few more turtles, but just made the one catch for the day.

Coming down from the rush, everyone headed back to their home boats for dinner. After a thorough boat clean, Moselle headed to Spyglass, and we all celebrated camper Lily’s birthday with cakes! We made two cakes that everyone enjoyed, and students liked having a chance to hang with students from the other boat on fleet! All around, a super great day!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
