Delta 1 Day 17: Saba Island Exploring

This morning, we awoke in the mooring field off the East side of the island. While campers slept, staff moved the boat around to Fort Bay. There, we loaded up the dinghy and headed to shore to meet Saba Conservation Foundation. This group of motivated Sabans formed in 1987 with the purpose of helping toward a “sustainable use of Saba’s rich and virtually unspoiled resources.” Sail Caribbean partners with the group when we are down island.

Today, we met them at the bay then jumped into taxis to head to an area where they are currently developing a new trail. This spot is the exact location of the very first settlement on Saba…incidentally also a PIRATE VILLAGE! Not the cute parrot on your shoulder kind either… Our Saba guide James happened to be an 8th generation descendent, also. Loaded up with axes, picks, machetes and rakes (don’t worry parents, the kids were well supervised!) we got to it with the trail. After two and a half sweaty, hot, and rewarding hours… we had not only cleaned up a large existing section of the trail, but also built another part!

Onwards to Windward side village, where we headed off to Jo-Bean. Jo is a well known artist on the island who creates all sorts of amazing glass works at her studio in the village. Students actually got to work one on one with Jo to make their very own glass bead which they proudly strung around their necks! We then sauntered off to Sea Witch Pizza where we all met for lunch before heading back to the boats. Yet another awesome day!!!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
