Delta 1 Day 18 – Day 19: Welcome Back!

 July 12, 2016 – July 13, 2016

At 5 p.m., we huddled for a last pep talk before the passage. Split into watches of 3 campers and one staff crew, we each stood 3 hours of helming, plotting latitude and longitude positions and checking in via the marine VHF with our fleet boats. The night sail was….magical! With the moon high in the sky, we witnessed its passing and setting, and still the night wore on.

As morning approached, and with a rainbow to guide the way, we sailed the last 10nm towards Fallen Jerusalem and into the BVI! With just a little sadness that our down island adventure is over, we prepared to lower sails and anchor at Long Bay. What an experience to have shared together.

By midday, we cleaned the boat, and were ready to head ashore. Our welcoming committee included most of the Sail Caribbean Fleets – Charlie, Bravo, Sierra and Foxtrot!  We all gathered together to celebrate our achievements….and COMPETE! Olympics, a Sail caribbean tradition includes tug’o’war, trash art and dizzy fender relay. Meanwhile, campers also went out on standup paddleboards, and Pico sailing dinghies. YEP (Youth Empowerment Project) joined us for the afternoon to spend time with our campers. YEP is a local BVI organization that provides an after school program for kids, working with volunteers to provide unique experiences.

In the evening, Sail Caribbean staff put on a BBQ for us and then we headed back to the boats for a well deserved sleep.
