Foxtrot 1 & Sierra 1 Day 12: Turtling Session Graced Us With A Baby Octopus & Reef Shark!

This morning, we woke up at Trellis Bay on Beef Island. Our day started with a truck tour of the highs and lows of our beautiful home island of Tortola for our divers and time for our non-divers to peruse the many shops along the shoreline of Trellis.

On the truck tour, our divers got to drive around Tortola and see awe-inspiring vistas of surrounding islands from many of the peaks on Tortola! The non-divers enjoyed Aragorn’s Local Art Centre and Studio and Jeremy’s Kitchen at Trellis Bay and then headed back to our boats and completed pre-departure checks. We set our sails to Deadman’s Bay on Peter Island and had a breezy sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel. At Deadman’s, we dropped our anchor and got ready for an afternoon of turtle tagging and a marine biology lesson.

During our turtling session, some of us saw a baby octopus and a reef shark, but unfortunately the turtles were too quick for us to capture today. After turtling, we made a delicious dinner of chicken teriyaki stir fry and then relaxed with a quiet night on board. We played rounds and rounds of various card games, all being from different students’ favorites pastime picks. We ended the night making friendship bracelets and powering down to be ready for the day ahead!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
