Alpha 1, Bravo 1, Charlie 1, Delta 1, Foxtrot 1 & Sierra 1, Day 1: Arrival Day!

As each camper of our Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Foxtrot and Sierra programs came into view at the St. Thomas airport, our peppy team of counselors welcomed the young travelers and assisted with finding suitcases. In waves, we began to migrate to the ferry. Taking up the entire top deck, our excited campers enjoyed the breezy journey to Tortola. After passing through customs, we were officially on BVI land. As we approached Hodges Creek Marina, we could see our yellow Sail Caribbean flags waving in the wind. Our boats were ready for us! Each catamaran and monohull was excitedly combed over by its new inhabitants, luggage being unpacked and colorful hammocks being set up on deck. Dinner was dished out – chicken with peppers, rice and coleslaw – and brought back to home boats. The first dinner as a boat family was delicious!  Once all bellies were full, our founder and director, Mike Liese, called everyone together. He went over the Sail Caribbean culture and the do’s and don’ts, and ensured that everyone felt welcomed and safe! 

The crews aboard each boat showered off the airport vibes of that morning and clustered for their first boat meeting. This is our favorite way to end the day. Captains and mates like to begin with “getting to know you” games at the start of program, and then transition into more educational activities or going over that day’s highs and lows  as the boat gets closer.

As the yawns became contagious, Hodges Creek Marina fell silent. On the schedule for tomorrow: island hopping!
