A-Staff Training day 7

This morning, I woke up with the best attitude in Nanny Cay—and I’m pretty sure the entire staff felt the same! After a well-deserved night off, we finally got the amount of sleep we’d been searching for. The first thing I did was grab my friend Reagan from Mile Hi so we could get an iced coffee from the café, and it hit the spot. We sat outside in some wooden chairs surrounded by greenery, with hens and chicks walking around our feet. At 8 a.m., we walked back to the boats and had breakfast family-style. I was still a little full from my coffee, so I just had some cereal and fruit.

After breakfast, we split up by boats to begin rotations. First up were docking lessons. We practiced going in and out of dock spots while switching roles so that we all had the chance to become docking pros with the catamarans.

Next, we rotated to a mental health training session. It was a super interesting and valuable lesson on recognizing the signs when someone is struggling and how to respond appropriately based on a person’s specific needs.

For our final rotation, everyone came together as the office staff gave us a formal introduction. They explained who they are and what they do, and it was really cool to hear how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.

After rotations, we returned to the boats and had lunch. Soon after, we split up again, and I headed back to Mile Hi. We set sail for Little Harbor, and everything was going great at first—our communication was solid, and spirits were high. Unfortunately, Mile Hi experienced some technical difficulties, and we decided to change course and head to Norman Island to find a mooring ball instead. After a fun sail and some emergency drill practice, we successfully caught a mooring ball with only one engine—success!

Due to the change in plans, we moved quickly through the rest of the evening: showering, dinner, and cleaning. Then everyone gathered on Beau Bud for our staff meeting, where we reflected on what we’d learned during mental health training. We took time to talk about our own mental health and shared what helps us most when we’re feeling dysregulated. By the end of this awesome conversation, we were all mentally and physically exhausted, and we powered down for the night.

Tomorrow, I’m sure we’ll finally make it to Little Harbor!
