Alpha 1 2015 – Day 7

written by mate, Alex Armson, Brought to you by the crew of Venture

Today, Sean was our skipper and Daniel was his navigator and mate. We were sailing from Nanny Cay to Marina Cay, and picking up a mooring ball there. It was a really great sail, with a lot of keeling over. The wind was really strong, with gusts of around 19 knots, so we decided to reef our mainsail once.

After a buffet breakfast of bagels, cereal and fruit, we had a volley ball competition on the beach at Nanny Cay where Renee, Daniel and Michael played really well and knew what they were doing a lot more than everyone else. Sean, Jack, Daniel and Julian also played a good soccer game while Jenna, Sara and Ellie swam in the ocean. We all went on a truck tour of Tortola where we got to explore areas we hadn’t seen before.

Sean managed to maneuver the boat out of the docks perfectly, but it was so windy so we have now officially lost three hats overboard. We arrived at Marina Cay in time for dinner, after which we had a deep clean of the boat. Ellie, Jenna and Sara ensured that everything was spotless. We also had three people participate in “Hot Seat”, where you describe yourself and your life in two minutes then everyone else asks you questions about what you’ve said. It’s a great way to get to know random and really interesting things about each other.

Today our crew did a great job of tacking but we need to work on the amount of time it takes to clean. Our miracle moment was de-docking and mooring very efficiently.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
