Alpha Day 2: Brought to you by the crew of Venture

By wpdev July 9, 2014

Captain of Venture: Kathleen
Mate: Jordyn
Navigator: Bryce
From: Hodges Creek
To: Cooper Island
We woke up at 7:15 scattered around the boat. Most of us fell asleep on deck, however at 4:30 am we got a surprise rain shower so many of us ran inside and slept there. We ate breakfast and learned everything we needed to know about sailing and the boat before we left docks. Once we left Hodges, we sailed across Sir Francis Drake’s Channel.

We arrived at Cooper Island at 2. Once we were at Cooper, we did our swim test and stayed in the water for the rest of the afternoon! The water is so clear and beautiful! Jordyn, Alyssa and Kathleen floated on an inflatable turtle which was so fun! We did cannon balls off the boat and Bryce was voted best form.

Madeline and Phil poured dressing on themselves during the shower demo to demonstrate that boat life can be messy, but if you take a boat shower correctly, you will get clean. We all jumped in the water and took salt water showers with a 8 second fresh water rinse that the end. Gardner and Amelia cooked our first meal on the boat. Honey mustard and couscous meal was delicious! After that we did our boat cleaning jobs and sat down for our nightly boat meeting. We discussed our highs and lows of the day and played a fun activity! Then we all stayed together and played an intense game of spoons ad uno. We finished the day by eating cookies and hanging out together before we fall asleep.
Miracle Moment: accidently learning an advanced sailing skill (Heave to)

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
