Meet Our 2018 Bravo 2 & Charlie 2 Adventure Leadership Team

By wpdev July 15, 2018

Curtis Crooke
Program Director

Curtis graduated from Georgetown University in 2017 and began work as a Legislative Correspondent for the Congresswoman to the US Virgin Islands.  But nothing can keep him away from Sail Caribbean.  He is returning for his fourth year as a staff member after sailing for four years as a student and intern, attaining his Divemaster along the way. In addition to diving and sailing, Curtis enjoys traveling (he has been to all fifty state capitals!), watching sports, and hanging out outdoors in warm weather with flip flops and a pair of Chubbies.

Adam Grant
Fleet Captain

Adam is an outdoor education guide, having worked in the outdoor industry all over the world and for the last 5 years in Australia and Ireland. He has worked for various summer camps and has instructed kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and rock climbing. Adam grew up in Ireland and has a diploma in outdoor education in which he learned various skills required to teach using the medium of the outdoors, with 5 years of yacht sailing with a day skipper license. For the past year Adam has been working in Australia providing outdoor education for schools across the country.

Kyra Benforte
Provisions Manager

Kyra grew up in New York City and currently attends the University of Richmond in Virginia where she is a rising Senior. She joined us as a student on Bravo, Foxtrot, and Delta. For the past two summers, Kyra was a Mate on both Tango and Foxtrot, after completing the Echo college-age program. Kyra is majoring in Leadership and Italian Studies and spent the past fall studying abroad in Perugia, Italy.

Will Steward
Dive Coordinator

Having just completed his Master’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Southampton, Will has a passion for anything to do with the ocean. Be it sailing, scuba diving or trying to find his favorite underwater creature (nudibranchs!), it’s safe to say Will is in his element working with Sail Caribbean! Having gained his Divemaster qualification in Fiji, he went on to work in Zanzibar before coming to the BVI where he gained his Instructor qualification with Sail Caribbean Divers.

Alex Elliott
Captain of Manau

Meet Alex soon!

Megan Lundequam
Captain of Zibal

Born and raised in Winter Park, Florida, Megan grew up under the sun. Whether it was skurfing, surfing, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, or camping, Megan took every chance she could to be outside. As a rising senior at the University of Florida, she has taken her learning indoors and is currently pursuing a B.A. in Environmental Science. After joining the Sail Caribbean family as a student while in high school, Megan returned the summer of 2017 to participate in the SC Mate-In-Training program. She now joins us as a mate for the upcoming adventure season!

Tim Caruso
Mate of Manau

Originally from New York, Tim is currently pursuing a BA in Film and Screen Media in Cork, Ireland. A diver from age 13, Tim has learned to sail and dive with Sail Caribbean, earning his Rescue Diver and Divemaster certifications over three years. Sail Caribbean opened up a world of exploration to Tim, encouraging him to study abroad in Ireland. After graduation from high school in 2016, a new adventure awaited across the ocean with new friends and opportunity to explore. Tim’s first year in Ireland brought him around the country, travelling with friends and working on films along the way. Tim’s first year film was showcased at the Fastnet Film Festival in Schull, Ireland, and after travelling from Maine to Venice and finishing his second year of college, Tim is excited to return to Sail Caribbean for a familiar and adventurous summer.

Julia Malone
Mate of Zibal

Born and raised in a family that regularly moved homes and always cherished the outdoors, Julia became infatuated with and very accustomed to the lifestyle of outdoor adventure. Whether it was riding dirt bikes and mountain bikes with her brother and dad or hiking mountains and snorkeling oceans with family or friends, she learned that she needed to pursue a long term life and career in the great outdoors. Now entering her senior year at the University of Florida, Julia is finishing up two bachelor’s degrees – one in Environmental Science and the other in Psychology. She is currently certified as a Scientific Diver and plans to use her degrees and Scuba certifications to conduct underwater research on coral reefs, once out of undergrad. After participating in Sail Caribbean’s Mate-In-Training program last year and graduating to work as staff, Julia is excited to return again this year for another summer full of learning and adventures!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
