Like driving a car, sailing is a skill developed through practice, learning, and determination. Earning a license shows you’ve put in the time to become a competent sailor. However, unlike driver’s licenses, sailing certifications vary widely in quality, making it important to choose the right program. At Sail Caribbean, we believe in providing students with the strongest foundation possible, which is why we value the American Sailing Association (ASA) as a trusted, gold-standard certification recognized in the United States and worldwide.
Who is the American Sailing Association (ASA)?
The American Sailing Association makes sailing confidently possible for anyone, whether they’ve been on boats for years or never before imagined operating a sailboat. In the forty-six years of operation, ASA has certified over 600,000 sailors. With over four hundred affiliated sailing schools around the world, ASA has established itself as a highly respected accreditation. Their worldwide standards ensure everyone from around the world receives proper training to sail safely, confidently, and understand the rules of the sea they must obey. Whether you are enrolled in their beginner level course, ASA 101 Basic Keelboat, or their high level speciality courses for advanced sailors, your ASA certification will be recognized worldwide, whether that’s in the BVIs, Mediterranean, Australia, and beyond!

Breaking Down the Levels: What Do the Numbers Mean?
To begin your sailing certification journey, the American Sailing curriculum starts with fundamental knowledge necessary to operate a basic keelboat, learned throughout the course known as ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1. The reason this course is the ultimate tool for learning is that it requires zero prior knowledge about sailing. The program breaks down all the foundational information necessary, so by the end of the course, you will be able to skipper a 20-27ft sloop sailboat in light winds. Additionally, the course ensures sailors are capable of tying the essential knots, understand the rules of the road, and key terms used in the sailing industry.
Once the basics of keelboats are mastered, the curriculum seamlessly flows into the next course, ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising. The course builds upon the key skills learned from the ASA 101 course to progress the sailor’s knowledge and further their understanding of the boat’s operating systems and safety gear. ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising course also equips participants with the practical knowledge to comfortably sail in strong winds, as well as hands-on experience captaining larger sailing vessels.
Once mastered, participants will progress to the “Holy Grail” course for recreational sailors, the ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising license. This certification grants sailors the opportunity to skipper a boat of 30 to 45ft for multiple days. The course sharpens your navigation and anchoring skills while building the essential knowledge needed to live aboard a sailboat.
Why Get an ASA Sailing Certification?
The investment in an American Sailing Association certification provides more than just significant sailing skills; it demonstrates to the world that you are not just a passenger, you are a capable skipper. This certification serves as your passport to the ocean, enabling you to charter a boat independently—a privilege charter companies only extend to holders of the ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising license. For example, you and your family decide to vacation in the Mediterranean, sailing a beautiful 40 ft catamaran for a week. Because you demonstrated your expertise as a sailor when completing your ASA 101 Bareboat Cruising certification, you are approved to skipper the vessel without having to hire a captain and crew.

Does the Certification expire?
This certification is a significant resume builder for young adults, demonstrating their dedication and leadership skills. It is particularly useful for individuals looking to further their career in the sailing industry and build the hours to apply for their captain’s license. Unlike a driver’s license, you do not have to continuously renew your certification. Once ASA certified, the license is yours for life.
The Sail Caribbean Difference: Immersion vs. Weekend Courses
To truly get the most out of the education experience of an ASA course, it’s recommended to seek an immersive program, rather than spread out weekends over the course of a month. That’s the Sail Caribbean difference. Students participating in the ASA curriculum are not just learning during ASA practice sessions; their learning extends into every aspect of their daily life aboard our chartered sailboats. Typically, when individuals sign up for ASA courses through their local schools, their sessions likely take place from 9am to 5pm over two weekends. However, at Sail Caribbean, students live the curriculum. By fully immersing themselves in the lifestyle of sailing, students deepen their understanding as they constantly practice the skills through a real-world application. Students rapidly adjust and become significantly more comfortable skippering both large and small sailboats.

Can a Beginner Start with No Experience?
The most magical part of the Sail Caribbean ASA experience is the fact that many students arrive having never stepped foot on a sailboat before, and by the end of their program, you will find them with the biggest smile on their face, thriving at the helm. Students with zero prior experience confidently ace their ASA 101 certification, ready to pursue the next course. This is because of the sailing environment we foster at Sail Caribbean. It is the best program to take complete beginners, to passionate and capable sailors, through a fun and structured program.
