Foxtrot 1 & Sierra 1 2015 – Day 5

written by Program Director, Oliver Bierman-Lytle

The Bight, Norman Island to Great Harbor, Peter Island

Captain of the Day on I Am Free: Alejandro Cordoba

Navigator and Mate: Mayra

The morning began with the splitting of the fleet. Sierra went ashore and hiked Norman Island, posed for a new boat photo, played rhythm master and ninja on the helicopter pad and went back to boats for their first upwind sail. Meanwhile, the crew aboard Miss You reached Great Harbor for their afternoon dive.

On the sail, the students learned about upwind maneuvering and Alejandro performed his first tack on the helm! In the afternoon, the soon-to-be Open Water Divers went on their first open water dive, the certified divers enjoyed their first dive, and even Marley, Julie, and Mayra got to experience their first time breathing underwater as discover scuba  divers. Eric remained with several staff members, giving his input on cake baking, searching for turtles, but finding a giant stingray during an hour and a half snorkel, and joining us on a RIB for Paparazzi. When the divers returned, they discovered that our fleet was surrounded by the three other Sail Caribbean fleets. After a squat competition across the mooring field, a BBQ chicken dinner, and three minute interviews during boat meeting, which helped the students get to know each other and learn fun facts about their boat-mates, the 11 SC boats turned in for the night.

Our miracle moment: seeing a shark!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
