Arrivals and First Sail

The students had a long travel day but were greeted by excited staff and clean boats once they reached Hodges Creek Marina. After students were settled in, they enjoyed a hot meal and spent the night getting to know each other.

The morning started with a breakfast buffet followed by the prior to first briefing. This is an in-depth orientation of the boat and life onboard. By 10 am the boats were ready to complete their first de-docking. Kajsa, Moet, Thor and Great Catsby made their way off the docks and set sail for Benures Bay off of Norman Island. On the journey over students learned how to raise/lower the mainsail and furl/unfurl the jib.

At Benures Bay, the boats hooked to a mooring ball and spent the rest of the afternoon and early evening snorkeling, paddleboarding and jumping off the boat. Around sunset, the students were all pretty tired from an exciting first day of sailing. They prepared dinner and learned how to take boat showers before calling it a night.

The rundown of the boats:

Kajsa- Capt. Riley, Mates – Madie and John

Thor- Capt. Powell, Mates – Tara and Sara

Great Catsby- Capt. Ollie, Mates – Tim and Murph

Moet- Capt. Jackie, Mate – Callie

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
