Alpha 1 2015 – Day 4

written by mate, Alex Armson

Today, we woke up to enjoy a yummy buffet breakfast to start ourday. Then Dean, Drew, Katie and Hazel went diving but were unfortunately a bit chilly. While they were diving, Aiden, Oliver, Matt, Betsy and Kenzie went to Norman Island and hiked to the top and played games on the helipad.  Then, they went back to the beach and played more games there, like the Human Knot in the shallow water. It was a team building activity where we had to work together to untangle ourselves without letting go of each others’ hands. It was salty, smiley fun.

Afterwards, everyone joined up on the boat for the sail. Hazel was our trusty skipper today who had Katie as her navigator and Drew as her mate. Today’s voyage was a sail from The Bight at Norman Island to Sophers Hole on Tortola which was very pleasant, on mostly a broad reach. When we arrived at Sophers Hole, we ate a kid’s favorite course of pizza bagels, in the process, accidentally breaking yet another plate. It’s alright Dean! We spent the rest of the day swimming in beautiful, clear waters, and finishing up the day with boat showers. Dinner was honey mustard chicken and veggies, which we may have accidentally spilled and need a little bit of help with in the future. After dinner, everyone enjoyed ending our day with our daily game of “mafia”.

Today our crew did a great job of asking for help when it was needed, and we may need to work on our honey mustard making. Our quote of the day was from Aidan who said, “Oh, I thought I was tan for a second!”  Tomorrow we look forward to Challenge day, where students try their hand at managing the boat all by themselves.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
