Alpha 2 2015 – Day 12

written by mate, Alex Armson, brought to you by the crew of Xeres

Today, Casey was our skipper and Matt was his navigator and mate. The day began when John and Bridget made pancakes for everybody. It was race day so we started to prepare to try and beat our competition, Xeres, in a circumnavigation around Scrub Island. Our halliard team was Matt, Garrett, Joseph and Alex. Carla, Bridget, Will, Alex and Joseph were controlling the jib sheets and Olivia, David and John controlled the main sheet and the jib furling line.

Xeres was the first off the line but we weren’t close behind her. We maintained a steady speed but after a few inefficient tacks, it was unfortunately clear that Xeres was going to maintain the lead.

After mooring at Marina Cay, we then went to the beach at Long Bay to compete against Xeres in Olympics! There were three events, the first of which was synchronized swimming, which we think Venture did the best in. We, then had a sand art competition where we buried our mate, Alex, and made her into a convincing mermaid. We then finished with a human knot race where every team member holds onto a long piece of line and tries to tie a bow line with everyone holding on, which Venture won for sure!

Overall, it was a great day and our crew did a great job of maintaining a great competitive attitude, but we need a little work on our racing skills.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
