Alpha 2 2015 – Day 6

Today, Joseph was our captain and Alex was his navigator and mate. We started the day when Alex woke everybody up at 7a.m. and then had a hearty breakfast. The divers left to complete their last practical skills classes which  means that after today, they can begin more challenging dives! Those who weren’t diving circumnavigated to our next destination. They sailed from Pirates Bight on Norman Island to Salt Island and it was extremely windy, with huge rolling waves. Joseph did an excellent job at the helm and made sure we were tacking upwind safely and efficiently.

After Bridget, Alex, David, Matt and Casey came back from diving, they joined up with Olivia, Carla, Will, John, and Garrett, and we all went to shore to participate in some community service. Salt Island is uninhabited, so its shores unfortunately accumulate a lot of trash. We had a competition with Xeres to see who could collect the most. To our pleasure, we won! Bragging rights came along with the prize of brownies.

We then returned to the boat for dinner and boat meeting. Today our crew did a great job of sailing upwind in heavy winds, but we need to improve on ensuring dinner clean is done properly. Our quote of the day was from John, “We need those brownies!” Our miracle moment was the longer fresh water showers provided by some heavy rain in the morning.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
